Books and Essays

Know a high school senior in Philadelphia? Check out the 2011 Edward F. Chacker Essay Contest. The winner receives a $1,000 college scholarship and a chance to read his or her essay at a Naturalization Ceremony at the Federal Courthouse in Philadelphia on May 2, 2011 - pretty cool opportunity for a 17 year old!

Handmade Pocketbook Journal by Strawbridge (the etsy shop, not the department store)

The Chacker Essay Contests asks Seniors to write an essay of at least 1,000 words on the question:

"If you were chosen to advise soon-to-be United States Citizens at their Naturalization Ceremony, what would you tell them their responsibilities are as a United States Citizen? Why are these responsibilities important?"

The fine print (the contest is run by lawyers, what did you expect?):

All entries must be received by Michael Petitti at the Philadelphia Bar Association, 1101 Market Street, 11th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19107 or by NOON on Friday, April 22, 2011 or email to chackeressay@philabar.org. Please keep quotations to a minimum. Submissions should include the student's name, address, telephone number and school on a cover sheet accompanying the essay.

Good luck to anyone who enters the essay contest!
