This week we are featuring local stores that have great items because, although we love shopping online, sometimes shopping in person is great, too! Most of the stores we are featuring also have websites that you can buy from.

Today's feature is Mineralistic, one of my most favorite shops in Philadelphia.You can find an array of fantastic, whimsical, and charming items to enchant and inspire you. I truly love their jewelry (they have the best selection of amber in the city, in my opinion). They also have beautiful crystals, faeries, dragons, and gargoyles. Also, they have fun wall signs and other decorations. My brother got a wonderful dragon lamp for his massage therapy practice.

For over 20 years, Mineralistic has been a fixture on South Street in Philadelphia. The store itself is amazing, as the work of seven talented artists grace the walls and the outside is a stained glass facade.

It's official. As of midnight tonight, I am officially the aunt of a teenager. I don't know how this happened. I remember the day she was born like it was yesterday. I didn't have a cell phone, few people did, so I had to call my dad from a pay phone in the hospital to tell him the good news. I am excited to celebrate with her this weekend though.

Woot! It's Friday. I am very excited. This week was brutal and I need a break. I have a couple of projects that I am working on for friends who are having babies or birthdays so I am sitting here enjoying the air conditioning and a coke and working on that.

Ok, I am finally back after having a broken computer for two months. It's been a bit brutal having to use my blackberry for all of my non-work-related internet needs. I had to go into the bank and wait in line to do banking last week. How did I ever survive in 1996? I read more books for sure.

I've been so stressed out at work lately. During the day I am a divorce lawyer. It's not as glamorous as it seems on tv (i.e., not like George Clooney in Intolerable Cruelty). Although I do power up prenup people some of the time, it can be exhausting.

This winter has definitely not helped my waistline. Whenever the weather is bad I just want to lay around under a blanket and eat food. I just signed up for the calorie counter at Livestrong.com this morning. I am already paying more attention to what I am eating. It's amazing how quickly you can eat 3,000 calories in a day without realizing it!

I had a great holiday weekend with my family and I hope you did, too! There was plenty of food, including apple cake, vanilla roasted pears, easy jam tart (I made it with blueberry jam and it was delicious. Strawberry, blackberry and peach are on my list of things to do), and garlic butter roasted mushrooms. The amazing recipes from Smitten Kitchen were truly unbelievable. I really need to go on a diet now and start an exercise routine.

Hershey Park Happy

Tomorrow is a big day. I am off to Hershey Park for the holiday spectacular with my mom and niece. We went in the summer and it was SO much fun. I just need to find a pair of warm boots in the morning so my feet don't freeze like they did last Saturday when I was in New York City.

I have been in love with bunny rabbits my entire life. When I was one year old, one of my many aunts gave me a rabbit stuffed animal named Cotton Tail that I loved for many many years.

Philadelphia's Support Center for Child Advocates is collecting donations of toys, gifts, gift cards, new warm clothing, etc. for children and teens who receive services through their organization. Support Center is the country's oldest and largest pro bono legal and social services agency for children. Their mission is to advocate for abused and neglected children in Philadelphia, with the goal of securing a permanent, nurturing environment for every child.

This holiday season, you can help change a child’s story. Here’s how:

· Coordinate a Child Advocates Toy Drive at work, among friends and family, at your child’s school, or at your church or synagogue. We will send you the names and ages of children – you tell us how many -- on adhesive labels that can be distributed to your donors. We suggest a minimum of 10 children. When you’re done, you can deliver the toys to us or we’ll make arrangements to pick them up.

· Buy or make gifts for our children (Birth to 21). We especially need gifts for teenagers. Gift cards are an easy way to give to this age group and our teens love them! (Ideas: CVS, Target, Wal-Mart, movie theaters, Blockbuster, Foot Locker, Bath & Body Works, sports stores, Five Below, etc.)

· Adopt a family with special needs.

· Pick up toys at various Center City Philadelphia and suburban locations.

· Come help us sort and bag toys in preparation for delivery.

· Deliver toys to our kids. It’s a heartwarming activity and lots of fun! Delivery day is Saturday, December 18, 2010. Please let us know if you’re available. We begin delivering gifts at 8:00am.

Sultry Affair

Ah, seven months since my last post! Everything has happened, yet nothing has happened. I guess it's just life.

A few weekends ago, I went with a friend to Dos Segundos in Northern Liberties. After an excellent brunch and several Bloody Marys, we went to the Piazza at Schmidts to browse at the craft fair. Everyone was really nice. I picked up a fun necklace painted on the back of a domino for my niece. The seller's name was Natalie and she also made bracelets, earrings, pins and key chains that were super cute. I can't find a website for her items or I would post it!

My friend purchased earrings from Sara at Sultry Affair (it sounds a little naughty, but it's named after her love affair with jewelry and who doesn't have a love affair with jewelry?!) and she gave us both a free pair of earrings. I've worn them to work a bunch of times and get great compliments. Sultry Affair has an etsy shop with great items:

Another gap in posting! It's been a very busy fall/winter. I found a lump in my throat in September. It was misdiagnosed as thyroid cancer and I had half of my thyroid removed. Then I found out that it was not cancer and the initial pathology report was wrong. It was a lot to go through and I am still recovering.

The holidays were very nice. It was good to be with family and I definitely found out who my real friends are after going through a health crisis.

Luckily, I have plenty of scarves to cover the scar (which I won't post here, so you won't have nightmares about it!).

I think I may have ADD and I never knew it. I am working on so many scarves right now that I really need to focus and finish one of them. Here is a preview of what I am working on right now:

This is a long 100% organic cotton scarf with fringe on the end. It feels so nice. I can't wait to finish it and list it! I will have to resist keeping it for myself.

This is also a 100% organic cotton scarf. It will be a sort of wide stripe skinny scarf. Also very soft. It reminds me of what students might wear to college football games (I guess this one is for Michigan State fans).

This is a fun stripe scarf with varying thickness in the stripes. I am changing the yarn whenever I feel like it. I love the color combination and I can't wait to see it when it is finished.

Vintage Warehouse Sale This Weekend in Fishtown!!!

My favorite vintage store, Sazz Vintage, is having a warehouse sale this weekend! It is Sept. 25 - 27 from 12 - 5 pm at 2628 Martha Street in Philadelphia (Fishtown - yeah!).

Amanda, the owner, is super nice and always has her eye out for something special so there will be tons of great items.

While Sazz's website mostly has men's clothing, the store and warehouse have a lot of women's clothing and fun accessories. The warehouse sale is one of the best deals around, so check it out if you are in or around Philadelphia this weekend.

Even though Albertine's Creations is dedicated to knitting at this point and I love knitting, I also love ceramics.

I've been taking a pottery class for about two and a half years. My teachers are so nice and knowledgable.

I highly recommend taking up pottery if you can no matter what your skill level.

These are some of the items I've created over the past couple of years. Class starts again next week and I am so excited for it.

Farmer's Market

Went to the farmers market in Collingswood, NJ on Saturday and got some of the best tomatoes I've ever had. It's a cute little farmers market where they pull up with corn in the back of their trucks. I haven't had such good produce since I lived in Madison. It was so much fun.

Also went to a 30th birthday/going away party for a friend who moved to LA today. She lived in Philadelphia for 12 years and then moved to LA for grad school. I don't know if I could ever leave! I've been here for 8 years and I do love this city. It was a little emotional at the end of the night because I've known her for 4 years and we would go to dinner all the time. I wish her the best of luck in LA!

I am supposed to write 10 honest things about myself, so here they are:

1) I love watching The Soup.

2) I've always wanted to be a writer, but I am doing so many other things that I have not gotten around to it. I still hope to someday.

3) I wish I could do crafts all day, every day.

4) I love drinking regular Coke. I know it is bad for me, but I just love it so so so much.

5) I like to watch sports, especially cycling, baseball and college football and basketball. I mostly watch them at home by myself.

6) I obsessively check the weather all day every day. I am not sure why. I just do!

7) I really like playing scrabble.

8) I enjoy organizing large events.

9) Halloween through Thanksgiving is my favorite time of year. I love the smells, baking, wearing sweaters, picking apples, making chili, eating pumpkin pie, watching football, etc.

10) I wish I would find the time to blog more.

August and Everything After

The summer has gotten away from me. How is it the end of August already? My goal at the beginning of summer was to have 80 scarves with good pictures ready to upload on Labor Day weekend. I have about 30 ready to go and I am hoping to get a couple more finished by the end of the month. I have been primarily concentrating on a line of organic cotton scarves that are super soft. I will up load pictures shortly.

I am also contemplating a Labor Day week sale. If you have had any success with one, please let me know.

Monday Update

The past week has been incredibly busy. I can't even believe how quickly the summer is flying by! I somehow managed to take a nap yesterday afternoon and it was great. I love lazy Sundays, but don't get to enjoy too many of them. I am also loving that the rain finally stopped today.

I've been posting on twitter a lot lately and it is great for increasing views on items on etsy. I think I got more views on Sunday afternoon when I posted a link to my rainbow fringe scarf on twitter - for free - than I did when I bought a spot in the gift guide on etsy.

Etsy Showcase

In the last two weeks I purchased 2 spots in different etsy showcases. I purchased both at the same time, but I wasn't sure what to expect an I ended up with mixed feelings about it.

The first showcase was in the Gift Guides. This was pretty much a bust. I got about 15 views on the main scarf and a total of about 5 on the rest of my scarves. I definitely get about that many when I refresh an item, which only costs 20 cents as opposed to $7. That worked out to be about 47 cents a view, which is not good.

The second was in the Storque Showcase and I was definitely more pleased with it. I had about 62 views on the main scarf, which worked out to be about 11 cents a view. Keeping in mind that I am advertising in pretty much the "off season" as far as scarves go - at least in the Northern Hemisphere, I was more pleased. I gained broader exposure, but it is still more economical for me to just refresh individual items a bunch of times. I may try to purchase another showcase in the Storque in August or September when scarf season is approaching.

Weekend Update

I had an awesome birthday weekend! Brunch on Saturday was so much fun and it was great to see everyone. Then I had drinks on Saturday night with some good friends. We played pool into the wee hours of the morning...I am not good at pool but it was really funny. Apparently my awesome friend Stephanie is capable of making behind the back shots. The picture isn't great, but this is what it looked like:

The weather was beautiful for the bike race on Sunday. I even got some sun on my legs, which n-e-v-e-r happens. I am usually pale as a ghost. I also had a chance to knit while waiting for the racers to pass. It takes about 20 minutes between the times they pass. A woman came up to me and started asking me about my knitting so I told her about my shop. That was the first time that has happened, so I was excited.

I spent today shopping with my mother. I am looking to buy a new tv because the picture on the current one is starting to turn red on the right side. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated because when you only buy a tv once ever 12 years, it is a little overwhelming!

I also started kitting 2 new scarves. The first is with the chocolate an orange yarn and can be used either as a shawl, wrap or large scarf. The second is a delicate smaller knit scarf made with red rainbow yarn that includes lucious shades of brown and salmon. I am excited to finish them and post pictures!

In totally non-etsy related news, I am turning 30 on Tuesday! Woot woot! I don't really care about the age. I just want to do a bunch of fun stuff.

Lucky for me, the 25th Philadelphia International Cycling Championship is on Sunday and the weather is supposed to be beautiful. I am also supposed to have brunch with a bunch of friends on Saturday morning. I am so excited for this weekend!

I'm Much More Than A Princess...

I opted not to work last Sunday and Monday, so I had to compensate at work the rest of last week. I worked three 15 hour days and I was dead tired by Thursday night. Then I woke up at 4:45 am on Friday to accompany a friend to the hospital for a minor surgery. It was really early and I had to sit there for 4 hours, but she was ok at the end, so that is all that really matters. She should have the results soon and we are hoping for the best.

I worked a little today, then went shopping in some local shops for a wedding gift for a family member who got married to a longtime girlfriend spur of the moment. In one store I remembered how much I love the Story People prints. I am currently trying to decorate my office and I am considering a wall of Story People prints mixed with prints from Allison Strine. I have some prints from Story People - specifically More than a Princess and Real Reason - and some magnets from Allison Strine - Witchy and Kick Ass - and I L-O-V-E them all.

I am a little disappointed because I have not knitted yet this weekend. Between working, catching up on sleep and spending some time outside in the beautiful weather, I haven't had a chance. I am currently working on what I am calling a Grandma Scarf and I can't wait to finish it and post pictures.

I found out today that I have to work all weekend - boooo! I am going to try very hard to get enough work finished so that I can have at least one day off because I am tired already and it's only Tuesday. Working all weekend will definitely cut into my plan to spend the weekend knitting, too.

Saturday Fun

I had 8 inches of hair chopped off today. I woke up and decided that I could not stand having long hair for one more day. It was past the middle of my back and now it falls right below my shoulders. It was definitely time for a change and just in time for summer!

After I got my hair cut, I wandered around the city looking for a summer purse. I've already spent the last 2 months looking in stores and countless hours on etsy looking for a workable bag. The best I can find is the mini granny bag by Tago Design. They are really cute! I haven't bought one yet because even that is a little bigger than what I really want. If you know of a small bag with a zipper (I live in the city and need to protect my wallet at all times) that has a shoulder strap but isn't too long, please let me know.

I am sure a lot of people are following Heart Handmade. It's an awesome blog, but I especially L-O-V-E the "5 Random Things..." segments. I am fascinated by people's likes and dislikes and think it's great to have some insight into other people's quirks.

Here are 5 random things about me...

1. I am a huge fan of professional cycling.

2. I didn't like cats when I adopted mine. I distrused my cat for the first 3 days he lived in my house and slept with my bedroom door shut so he couldn't get in (to do what? I don't know). I now love them more than anything and don't know what I did for entertainment before I got them.

3. I love bright colors, but usually wear black. It's just easier.

4. I have an unnatural fear of heights and elevators even though I lived in a high rise for 3 years and work in a sky scraper now.

5. I may be solely responsible for keeping Coca-Cola in business. Regular, not diet, please.

It's been almost three months since I joined etsy and I haven't had any sales yet, but I am having a ton of fun. I am also not really concerned because scarves are obviously winter items and it is summer in the US.

I started participating in forums and people are really nice and helpful. It's great that it's not really a competition. You should check out this forum post because lots of great people showed me their favorite items.

I've also managed to settle in at my job a little bit. I like it there, so that is helpful. There is just so much to learn though!

I am going to make a better effort to update this blog - that I am sure no one is even reading :)

Business Card Bonanza

In addition to starting Albertine's Creations three weeks ago, I start a new job at a law firm this week. Marketing has started to become a major preoccupation for me right now.

I watched all of the etsy videos on marketing and having business cards and I opted to make my own business cards for my shop (the law firm will take care of itself - there is a budget. Plus I don't know how many people would want a lawyer with homemade business cards).

The process was fairly easy - I went to Staples and bought card stock, came home and uploaded a small photo of one of my scarves to a word document, added some text and the website url and then copy and pasted as many as one sheet of paper could hold. Then print many copies and carefully cut out the cards. This was the end result:

This led to the next question - how to find people to give the cards to?

I gave them out to everyone I know, but most of these people already know about my website. I also gave cards to anyone who told me they liked the scarf I was wearing. But to be successful, I need to reach more people off of etsy.

I started searching online for coffee shops, etc., in Center City Philadelphia that let you leave your business card and ran across 10 Unusual Places to Drop Your Business Card. The author, identified only as Ritu, has some great suggestions that I had not considered - leave cards at the bus stop, on the table in a restaurant, in the grocery store and department store.

I am definitely going to try the tactic of just leaving my cards everywhere. I will let you know how it goes. In the mean time, if you know of any shops in Philadelphia that let you leave your business cards, please let me know. I would still like to hit those.

The Story Behind the Cowls

As you may have noticed, cowl scarves have been popular for the last couple of years. As a poor law clerk I needed to find a fairly reasonably priced gift for my fashionable city friends around the holidays. I began making cowls and giving them to my friends as holiday gifts. Their friends saw the cowls and wanted one of their very own and Albertine's Creations was born. I also have a lot of fun knitting and cannot possibly use all of the lovely items that I knit, so I am making them available for other people to love.

Although I've been a voyer and buyer on etsy for several years, I am still getting used to being a seller. I spent every spare moment I had over a two week time period reading all of the storque articles and blogs that I could to learn everything I could possibly learn about being a seller before becoming a seller myself. I still have much to learn. As a part-time crafter, I intend to use this blog to chronicle the ups and downs of my shop and to track what works for me and what does not. I hope someone else can find this helpful some day!
